The Tatars converted to Islam in 900 AD, but today there are four primary religious worldview segments:

  • Russian Orthodox Tatars – descending from Tatars who were forced to convert when the Russian Monarchy conquered them in the 1500s.
  • Atheist – A segment who considers themselves to be atheist or agnostic – the effect of decades of communism.
  • Practicing Muslims – adhere to and closely follow all the tenants of Islam
  • Secular Muslims – they don’t observe Islam and may know little to nothing about it, but if asked, they will tell you they are Muslim because they are Tatar.
