The Republic of Tatarstan is outside the 10/40 window and is situated in and is a subject of the Russian Federation.

There are actually 3 main subgroups of Tatars based on their location: Crimean Tatars to the west near the Ukraine, Siberian Tatars in eastern Russia and into Asia, and the Volga Tatars of Tatarstan, in the Volga Federal District where the great Volga (İdel) and Kama (Çulman) rivers converge. The information on this site is focused on the Volga Tatars of Tatarstan.

As of the 2010 Census, the population of Tatarstan was 3,786,488 with an estimated 53.2% Tatar. It is estimated that there are only about 0.01% Christ followers among the Volga Tatar.
